Teacher Collaboration
One of the most important aspects of my job as a high school librarian is collaborating with teachers to provide lessons that support their curricula. One of the most effect ways I have found to deliver such lessons is to first use a slideshow to present and model to students how to access resources, cite sources, and/or conduct research, and then after the presentation provide students with the opportunity to engage in those skills while circulating the classroom and offering support.
The lessons below are a small sampling of the slideshows I give at the start of my collaborative lessons, each of which I developed at the request of teachers and in collaboration with them.
9th Grade English
When a 9th grade English class was assigned a paper that required conducting internet research, a colleague asked that I give students a lesson both on identifying credible sources and using proper MLA citations. The slideshow below is what I used to teach the 9th grade students about both topics.
10th Grade History
To support the 10th grade international track students embarking on their first IB-style research paper, I collaborated with their teacher to provide a series of lessons that focused on answering an IB-style question, developing a research question and keywords, and choosing and searching databases. Below are the slides and handouts I made for the series of classes I taught for this class.
11th Grade Media Literacy
One of the courses the 11th graders in the French program take is a class called Connaissance du Monde (CdM), a two-year course, taught in English, that requires students to explore contemporary issues and conduct a personal research project. To support the curriculum, the CdM teacher asked that I give students a lesson on media literacy, specifically on media bias. The lesson and worksheets are included below.
Technolgy Support
Although FASNY has an IT department, there are still areas of technology where I provide faculty and students with technology training and support. Since I am the school administrator for Turnitin, an online plagiarism detection software, I provide teachers training and support in access and using it; I also provide teachers with training and support on software such as Padlet and Canva.
How-to Guide for Turnitin
I created this guide to help faculty set up Turnitin to use with their classes.
Faculty Professional Development Day:

Screenshot of the Padlet I presented to faculty. Teachers chose the presentations they wanted to attend, and I presented to three different groups of 20-25 teachers from the lower, middle, and high schools. Later feedback included lower school teachers sharing that they had successfully incorporated Padlets into their lessons.
Collection Development
One of my goals for the library collection has been to add books to the library that generate student excitement and interest, as the student population at FASNY is not one that frequently checks out books. To increase student engagement, I informally surveyed students and learned that what they wanted in the library was more manga. Using both student suggestions and online research, I have added 96 manga texts to the library so far, a 1200% increase in the number of manga texts currently available for students to check out.
